The Essence of Christian Counseling

“Face the hard questions that life requires you to ask. Gather with other travelers on the narrow road, pilgrims who acknowledge their confusion and feel their fears. Then, together, live those questions in My Presence.”

Excerpt From: Crabb, Larry. “God’s Love Letters to You.”

I love my job.

In fact, yesterday morning, I could hardly contain my excitement, as I sat with one of my clients, bearing witness to the tremendous growth and healing she is allowing God to perform on her wounded heart.

It has been a slow and arduous road for us- 9 months of wading through the muck and mire of sin, confusion, childhood trauma, and the challenges of marriage. But she has remained faithful to the work, showing up each week with “the tough questions,” not afraid to sit in the pain and trust me to travel alongside her.

“Gathering other travelers” along this road of reconciliation is the essence of what it means to be a Christian Counselor; or as Larry Crabb put it, “pilgrims…” who are not afraid to face the tough stuff of life in the presence of the Lord.

Who are your trusted traveling companions? Mine are few, but oh so reliable and treasured. My hope for you dear friends, is that your journey is one being shared by fellow pilgrims of the faith. Providing sacred ground for you to acknowledge your pain and confusion, but ultimately, gracefully pointing you towards the hope and security that is yours in Christ Jesus.
