Ring The Bells

Ring The Bells by Johnnyswim and DrewHolcomb and The Neighbors

[Verse 1]

Ring the bells!

This time I mean it

Bid the hatred “fair thee well”

Give back the pieces of my Jesus

Take your counterfeit to hell!

Bang the drums!

This means war

But not the kind you’re waiting for

We say mercy won’t be rationed here

That’s what we’re fighting for

[Pre-Chorus 1]

All is fair in love and war

And what the hell is loving even for?

If we can’t sing it loud enough

We’ll keep on adding voices up

[Chorus]

Ring the bells

Ring the bells

Ring the bells

Ring the bells

[Verse 2]

Move your feet

You tiny people

You’ve been hiding for so long

Behind your statues and your steeples

Does that hit too close to home?

I got faith to move a mountain

And to watch that mountain move

It’s time for words to fall like thunder

Sound of justice breaking through

[Pre-Chorus 2]

If all is fair in love and war

Then what the hell is loving even for?

The world laughs and the martyrs sing

But love breaks through the cavalry

[Chorus]

Ring the bells

Ring the bells

Ring the bells

Ring the bells

[Verse 3]

You called me boy instead of son

And I ain’t the only one

Was in the throneroom of a kingdom

Where I found that I belong

I ain’t scared to face a fortress

I have seen them fall before

With broken bones you’ve built it

But it crumbles board by board.

I knew that my favorite musical group were Christians, that became obvious when their live show was more like a Holy Spirit-filled church service. Or when you watch their Instagram story and they are having “church” with friends in their living room with just an acoustic guitar and their voices. The lyrics of their other songs have verses like,

Oh, oh, oh
Raise a glass and sing along
I wanna learn what David played
When he found himself alone
Let it ring, let it ring
On every street and stage
Till the loneliest feel known
A melody my mama hums
When I’ve forgotten my way home
I wanna sing what David sang
Oh won’t you sing along
Oh, oh, oh
Raise a glass and sing along
And If the walls of Jericho
Could crash on down to just a tune
I bet our walls could fall also
Even if only me and you
or
In the wake of every heartache
In the depth of every fear
There were diamonds, diamonds
Waiting to break out of here
Don’t you think I hear the whispers
Those subtle lies, those angry pleas
They’re just demons, demons
Wishing they were free like me

[Chorus]
We’re the fire, from the sun
We’re the light when the day is done
We are the brave, the chosen ones

We’re the diamonds, diamonds
Rising up out the dust
(Oh) Rising up out the dust
(Oh) Rising up out the dust
(Oh) Rising up out the dust

[Verse 2]
All your curses will surrender
Every damning word will kneel

They’re just mountains, mountains
About to turn into fields

But “Ring The Bells” is on a whole other level. I believe that it is their proclamation that they are sick and tired of the church’s tendencies to isolate, discriminate, judge and condemn. Church, that is not our job. Let us not ignore sin, but even more importantly, let us not ignore the sinner.
This is a different blog, I understand that – but music is worth a thousand words this morning. Click on the link below to hear their song. And give me back the pieces of my Jesus.
